Website Hosting Migration Checklist

Move your website with fewer avoidable surprises.

Updated 7 October 2026 · Independent editorial guide · Affiliate disclosure

Quick take: A migration plan should protect the site, email and domain settings—not just copy website files.

Before the move

Record DNS, email/MX settings, PHP/runtime versions, database sizes and SSL state. Take independently restorable backups.

During the move

Stage the copy, test forms and payments, verify redirects and update configuration without changing DNS too early.

After the move

Lower DNS TTL beforehand when possible, monitor mail and forms, validate HTTPS and leave the old service available until verification is complete.

Questions to resolve before buying

  • Does the actual checkout provide the website capacity and tools you need?
  • What will you pay at the first renewal, including essential add-ons?
  • Can you restore and migrate your content without unreasonable downtime?
  • Who is responsible for software updates, security and backups?
